AP Television News FILE: Dead Sea, Israel - 8 June 2006 9. Wide of Dead Sea STORYLINE: An Israeli company has discovered a small amount of oil at a drilling site near the Dead Sea, raising hopes that the Jewish state could one day join its regional neighbours as a petroleum producer. Initial tests have found that the site would yield between 100 to 150 barrels daily according to Eli Tannenbaum, a geologist for the Ginko oil exploration company. While this is minuscule by global standards, Saudi Arabia produces nine million barrels a day, Tannenbaum said there are signs that larger amounts of crude are nearby. Tannenbaum said the whole area of the Dead Sea basin had "great potential" for oil. "Based on a detailed evaluation, using state of the art techniques, we've got to the conclusion that we can find reserves in the range of hundreds of thousands, hundreds of millions of barrels of oil," he said. The geologist also said that a hydrocarbon, or oil, trap was found about two kilometres (1.2 miles) north of the original site. Ginko, a private company, is performing quality tests on the newly discovered oil, but plans to begin drilling in the second location in the coming months, he said. Ginko abandoned the original drilling site in 1997 when oil prices were about $15-$20 US dollars a barrel. It revisited the site recently because oil prices have quadrupled since then, Tannenbaum said. Amir Mor, an Israeli energy expert, said hundreds of thousands of abandoned oil fields worldwide have been revisited in recent years due to the spike in prices, making it profitable to produce even a few hundred barrels of oil. Israel has a long history of oil prospectors many of them inspired by religious messages that have come up empty. The country has produced only 20 million barrels of oil in the last half-century, less than what the Saudis produce every three days. Massive Gas Field Begins Production Offshore Israel

The largest natural gas field in the rising Eastern Mediterranean region is now flowing after being discovered a decade ago. Read full story on JPT: 🤍 The $3.6 billion offshore Leviathan field was discovered a decade ago and soon will turn Israel into a gas exporter after years of the country relying on imports and coal-fired electricity. Leviathan is the largest natural gas field in the rising Eastern Mediterranean region that is increasingly attracting other top oil and gas players, including Exxon Mobil. Earlier this week, Egypt announced that it had awarded several exploration blocks to four of the world’s oil majors in both its Mediterranean and Red Sea territorial waters. Egypt opened its offshore sector to foreign operators when it awarded concessions for the massive Zohr gas field to Eni in 2016, and the country has already reduced gas imports as it looks to eventually become a net exporter.

Endangered Sea Turtles Rescued, Cleaned After Disastrous Oil Spill in Israel

When it comes to saving sea turtles, Israeli rescuers have discovered that mayonnaise is a miracle. Employees at Israel's National Sea Turtle Rescue Center are treating endangered green sea turtles affected by a devastating oil spill that has coated Israel's coast with thick black tar. The spill, which Israel's Nature and Parks Authority has called one of the country's worst ecological disasters on record, has coated most of Israel's 120 miles (195 kilometers) of Mediterranean coastline with sticky tar. It has caused extensive damage to wildlife, including sea turtles. Guy Ivgy, a medical assistant at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center in Michmoret, north of Tel Aviv, said 11 turtles are being treated. The center is run by Israel's Nature and Parks Authority. “They came to us full of tar. All their trachea from inside and outside was full of tar," he said. Workers have been removing the toxic substance from the reptiles' airways and found a creative way to flush it out of their digestive tracks. “We continue to feed them substances like mayonnaise, which practically clean the system and break down the tar," Ivgy said. The recovery process is expected to take a week or two, after which the turtles are expected to be released back into the wild. Thousands of volunteers and clean-up crews have mobilized to remove tar from Israel's beaches, a task that is expected to take months. Israel's Environmental Protection Ministry says it is investigating the cause of the oil spill. The incident is believed to have taken place in early February, and Israel said it received no prior warning before an estimated 1,000 tons of tar started washing up on shore. The tar has also washed north to Lebanon. On Monday, an Israeli court barred publication of all details of the investigation, including the name of the suspected ship believed to have spilled the oil, its route and ports of call. An Israeli journalists' association petitioned the court on Tuesday to have the order lifted.
