New NAS Expansion for a New Decade - But Is the QNAP TL-D800C Worth Your Data? 🤍 If you have been the owner of a NAS server for a few years, you know that available space will always be an eventual barrier in the end. Even in the very early days of network-attached storage it was already being pre-emptively considered. A NAS drive is not like most other computer hardware, in that an upgrade can be conducted on a hardware level, without significant impact on the software level. Sure, you can upgrade your NAS to a new model a few years down the line, but when you do that, it will almost certainly require all your shared files, paths and connected users to be shifted or changed. That is why when the inevitable day when your available space hits zero, you will be wondering how to proceed. Many home and small business users will use this as an opportunity to upgrade their NAS to a new model, move the HDDs over (in their RAID), all the while crossing their fingers and praising their backups, with 'almost' 100% confidence that the data migration will be fine and drives will continue to function as they did on day 1. But that still needs you to spend big on new hardware almost certainly more than your first NAS, as well as the loss of time (very dependant on your own setup) to repairing, replacing and recreating those existing network connections. It is for reasons like this that many users will consider the often more cost-effective AND easier to adapt NAS expansion option. The ability to add an additional HDD enclosure that will 'bolt-on' additional hard drive bays to their existing NAS RAID storage system and allow you to expand your available space has been around for almost as long as NAS itself, sometimes being used as local sync'd backups, as completely separate storage pools or just expanding the primary RAID accordingly. Today I want to discuss one of the several new QNAP NAS expansions revealed in their new TR and TL expansion series(full guide here), the brand new TL-D800C. This is their new 8 SATA Bay expansion device that arrives with USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB-C Support (10Gb/s) and is designed to be an affordable and reliable way to expand your storage, arriving at just over £400 - it is a whole lot lower in price than a new 8-Bay NAS, with the added benefit that it is also PC and Mac supported, so it can be used as a traditional DAS too. Some might argue that as it is JBOD, it has limited use outside of a NAS expansion (whereby the NAS CPU can conduct the RAID configuration and support) but we fast see a resurgence in JBOD use, with many users looking at thunderbolt and SAS solutions that have fast access and just do what they are told! There is no avoiding that the TL-D800C is not for everyone, with some looking at the TR series (hardware RAID built-in) instead. So, let's take a look and serif the QNAP TL-D800C deserves your data. I had to spend a lot of time and some money on my storage server. I've got something about deleting videos...... I CAN'T! Save yourself some cash and buy a WD Elements desktop external hard drive and rip it apart! 🤍 This is the equivalent NAS drive 🤍 Hang around, sometimes they're on offer - I paid £150 for mine. Yes, I know, I should be using RAID but I find it far more beneficial to back-up only the most important stuff and then delete things when I run out of space. QNAP QM2-4P-384 NAS PCIE NVME M.2 Expansion Card , Test in PC x4 slot NO BIFURCATION, benchmark, SSD compatibility In this video I unbox and test multiple SSD Brands listed below to check compatibility and also different setups for RAID and single disk with benchmark. This card can be used inside a PC and a NAS but I have only tested in the PC as I only currently have access to a QNAP TS-664 which is not compatible with this card as it is too long. The card supports 4 M.2 NVME SSD. I have tested the card inside a MSI Z690 Edge Wifi D4 motherboard in a PCIE 3 x16 slot which is only pinned out to support PCIE 3 x4 bandwidth. This card does not require pcie birfurcation support so its a good option to add NVME SSD's if your PC does not support bifurcation instead of trying to use a card like the ASUS Hyper m.2 card. SSD's tested: 1TB WD Black SN770 PCIE 4x4 1TB WD Black SN850 with Heatsink PCIE 4x4 1TB Crucial P5 PCIE 4x4 1TB Sabrent Rocket PCIE 3x4 (DID NOT WORK) 1.92TB Patriot P310 PCIE 3x4 (DID NOT WORK) The two drives which did not work are both based on a Phison controller and it is possible the card switch/controller has issues with Phison controller drives and I could not initially see any Phison drives listed in the QNAP compatibility list, please correct me if I am wrong or you have a different experience with Phison based drives in similar QNAP QM2 cards. New NAS Expansion for a New Decade - But Is the QNAP TL-D800C Worth Your Data? 🤍 If you have been the owner of a NAS server for a few years, you know that available space will always be an eventual barrier in the end. Even in the very early days of network-attached storage it was already being pre-emptively considered. A NAS drive is not like most other computer hardware, in that an upgrade can be conducted on a hardware level, without significant impact on the software level. Sure, you can upgrade your NAS to a new model a few years down the line, but when you do that, it will almost certainly require all your shared files, paths and connected users to be shifted or changed. That is why when the inevitable day when your available space hits zero, you will be wondering how to proceed. Many home and small business users will use this as an opportunity to upgrade their NAS to a new model, move the HDDs over (in their RAID), all the while crossing their fingers and praising their backups, with 'almost' 100% confidence that the data migration will be fine and drives will continue to function as they did on day 1. But that still needs you to spend big on new hardware almost certainly more than your first NAS, as well as the loss of time (very dependant on your own setup) to repairing, replacing and recreating those existing network connections. It is for reasons like this that many users will consider the often more cost-effective AND easier to adapt NAS expansion option. The ability to add an additional HDD enclosure that will 'bolt-on' additional hard drive bays to their existing NAS RAID storage system and allow you to expand your available space has been around for almost as long as NAS itself, sometimes being used as local sync'd backups, as completely separate storage pools or just expanding the primary RAID accordingly. Today I want to discuss one of the several new QNAP NAS expansions revealed in their new TR and TL expansion series(full guide here), the brand new TL-D800C. This is their new 8 SATA Bay expansion device that arrives with USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB-C Support (10Gb/s) and is designed to be an affordable and reliable way to expand your storage, arriving at just over £400 - it is a whole lot lower in price than a new 8-Bay NAS, with the added benefit that it is also PC and Mac supported, so it can be used as a traditional DAS too. Some might argue that as it is JBOD, it has limited use outside of a NAS expansion (whereby the NAS CPU can conduct the RAID configuration and support) but we fast see a resurgence in JBOD use, with many users looking at thunderbolt and SAS solutions that have fast access and just do what they are told! In this video, we show how to upgrade an existing set of RAID 5 drives (composed of four 1 TB hard drives) to larger drives by executing a qnap expansion on the existing raid, for this video we used a QNAP TS-453A NAS unit. Parts used on this video: 🤍 This method will work for any QNAP and RAID array level .Specifically on this video I will show you how tol upgrade from four x 1 TB drives to four x 4 TB drives, once the drives have been physically replaced and the RAID 5 array rebuilt, I will show you how to expand the RAID group and expand your storage pool as well to enable using the entire raid5 available storage once expanded to provide additional redundant raid protected space for your file backups, videos, pictures and business data. Edited: The fan in the RS1619XS+ is Y.S Tech FD124028EB-P, the RPM is 16000RPM max with a noise level of 51 db and the 3rd wire is F type The Fan in the RX1217 Expansion is Y.S Tech FD128032HB-P, the RPM is 5000 RPM max with a noise level of 53 db and the 3rd wire is F type. If you want to replace the fan, you will want to match the specs: i.e., 12V DC, Size (40x40mm or 80x80mm), the RPM, 4-pin with the 3rd wire feedback type is F (Tachometer). There are many videos for RS1619XS+ but none of them show you how to control the Expansion Unit in DSM. This video will show you that. It will also give you an idea about the noise from the original cooling fans. This video is for someone IT naïve as me. If you a professional, you dont need to watch this. It will be basic for you.

I just got my first NAS! Having so much data being generated while doing astrophotography and creating the YouTube videos, space was at a premium inside my computer. In addition to this, I was getting concerned with a drive failure and losing all the data. I decided it was time to get a NAS and when with the Synology DS1522+ and DX517 expansion unit, both are 5 Bays each. I have 4 x 4TB drives salvaged from a redundant NVR and 5 x 2TB drives to put to use, so no need to go and fork out for new drives at this stage. In this video we will take a look at the unboxing, setup the unit, transfer the data off the computer to free up 2 of the 2TB drives for transferring into the NAS. I setup 2 data volumes, one with the 4TB drives and the second with the 2TB drives. Come along and see how it goes......
