In this episode of Keep it Canada, Matty heads to Prince Edward Island to meet a potato farmer, go clam-digging, eat a whole lot of lobster rolls, and cook for his new Islander friends on the beach. He has what may be the best lobster in all of North America, which is due to cooling the cooked lobster in seawater. Matty finds out the hard way why clam digging can be dangerous work, but after a clam boil he comes out the victor. Prince Edward Island, Canada is known for Anne of Green Gables, red dirt and seafood. I went in search of the very best lobster rolls in Prince Edward Island. I drove my Ford Mustang all around the province and over a 3 day period tried 7 different lobster rolls to find the very best. Starting with the Sea Salt Cafe onboard the Northumberland ferry from Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island. I also had delicious lobster rolls at the Point Prim Chowder House and Oyster Bar, at the Water Prince Corner Shop, Lobster Barn, Richard's, Blue Mussel Cafe and Terry's Berries food truck. They were all delicious for various reasons but the lobster rolls from the Blue Mussel Cafe and Richard's were definitely my favorites. We had four days to explore the island and during that time, we visited fishing villages, walked along the famous red sand beaches, toured the home of Anne of Green Gables, sampled our first lobster roll, and enjoyed a delicious seafood feast prepared by Sam’s uncle who is a chef on the island. It was a really fun visit, so all that and more coming up in this video! We quickly retreated back to the farmhouse we had rented, and despite the mosquitoes attacking, we did get to enjoy a nice sunset on our sprint back. The following morning, we got up bright and early ready to explore the island. Our first stop, a beach for Togo to splash around in. After our visit to the beach, we hopped back in the car and drove up to Cavendish, where the main attraction is Green Gables Heritage Place. Whether you’ve read the books, seen the movies, or watched the series, setting foot here will transport you to the late 19th century where you can relive Anne’s adventures. The following morning we woke up to a rather grey and rainy day, but that wasn’t going to keep us from exploring the island. We hopped in the car and drove to Greenwich Beach, which had been recommended to us by a local. We drove to a nearby town where Togo got to enjoy some playtime on the beach, and after he had his fill of splashing around and fetching the stick, we got back in the car. At this point, the rain was really starting to pick up, so we returned back to the farmhouse. The next morning we drove to nearby Borden-Carleton, a town located right at the foot of the Confederation Bridge. Every tourist who drives to PEI passes through here, plus the town has a few tourist attractions like a lighthouse, a boxcar, and some fun photo ops. And have I mentioned that you get the best views of the Confederation Bridge? Because you do! That evening we had a very special guest. Sam’s uncle, Hans Anderegg, is a Swiss chef who lives on the island and teaches at the Culinary Institute of Canada. He kindly prepared us a seafood feast featuring oysters, scallops, fish and lobster. It was mouthwateringly delicious! * This is part of our Travel in Canada video series showcasing Canadian food, Canadian culture and Canadian cuisine. * * * Music We Use: Artlist

To find out more on where to eat in Charlottetown visit 🤍 My time on Prince Edward Island was far too short but it also reminded me that I need to spend more time in Canada. Things are changing and people are creating some really interesting food here. Although I was both delighted with the food at Lot 30 then dismayed by their perspective on sustainable fishing I left Charlottetown on a high note with some great experiences and I'd love to go back to the island to see more. If you only have a short time there were a few highlights you should consider for where to eat in Charlottetown. Culinary Boot Camp You really do cook a lot of food at The Culinary Institute of Canada's Culinary Boot Camp. I really like Chef Ilona, she's really down to earth and if you want to know where to eat she's a great resource. Also she showed me how to put a lobster to sleep, which made my day. The Big Orange Lunch Box I have to thank Twitter and specifically The Niagara Local for this recommendation. A great success story of a food truck making it to a bricks and mortar restaurant, the interior is odd as it appears as if it was once a dodgy bar but who cares, the food is great. Terre Rouge This food made me rethink Prince Edward Island. I'm from the East Coast so I know we do seafood well, I know there will be great cafes and of course the people will be friendly. This is what the Maritimes are all about. But when I stepped into Terre Rouge I realized that the East Coast could be all these things but also very modern. Take a look at the Instagram account (photos above), and you'll see the very definition of food porn, the charcuterie plate is enough to make this bacon girl's heart go aflutter. So Prince Edward Island you've tugged at my heart and I am not going to miss you because I know I will be back soon now that I know where to eat in Charlottetown.
