How to Try our Synology DSM on a QNAP NAS 🤍 Using Xpenology – A Warning! Right, let’s discuss the elephant in the room! and NASCompares are not responsible for the legal consequences of using Xpenology. It should always be noted that this is not endorsed by Synology and should be used purely as a form of reference and not as an alternative to purchasing a Synology NAS with included DSM software. This article is not intended for consumers. This article is intended for app development and research, and contains information and links only for trained professionals on study opportunities on DSM. We do not recommend routine use of XPEnology! For reliable operation of the DSM, you should buy the original product from the manufacturer! You should NOT use this as an alternative to a Synology NAS and for those that want to test the DSM software, we recommend visiting the live demo here. Important Things to Remember If you use this NAS Guide I cannot stress this enough – THIS IS NOT A VIABLE, LONG-TERM ALTERNATIVE TO A GENUINE SYNOLOGY NAS!!! Use this as a means to see if Synology DSM is right for you, or as a simple experiment. Do not think this is going to let you have the best of both brands – it will almost certainly be a poor representation of the Synology DSM user experience and also not a fair comparison from QNAP NAS either. Use this as your own risk and DEFINITELY do not use this as a stable platform for your data. Another Warning! This is NOT stable and Should not be used as an alternative to a Synology NAS Again, just in case you just scrolled past the first warning, I cannot stress this enough, if you are reading this because you are trying to install the Synology DSM software on your QNAP NAS, to replace QTS, or because you think using Synology DSM on the comparatively more powerful QNAP hardware, then stop right there! This is by no means perfect and even during the making of this tutorial, I encountered many bugs. Some very small, but others would be severely detrimental to the stability of your long term storage. This is NOTHING to do with QNAP or Synology software, but because of the inherent instability of the host and client software. I am producing this guide because so, SO many of you ask about the viability of this as a platform and although it works, it is by no means a replacement for QNAP QTS or retail bought Synology NAS Drive. So, in the interests of clarity, I have included a few of the errors and issues I encountered, so you can be fully aware of what this is. Sorry to be so negative, this is an interesting experiment and if you are a QNAP user, considering moving over to the Synology platform, this can serve as a great way to find out about the software before you take the plunge. Alternatively, you would be better off visiting the official Synology DSM demo found HERE. Making a move away from 3rd public cloud storage can be a big, BIG decision for some users. The ‘freemium’ and low cost monthly subscription to the likes of Google Drive and DropBox seems like a drop in the ocean, right up until you realise that over the years you have spent hundreds of pounds and you face the fact that you are going to need to consider moving that data onto something more long term and ‘in house’. For many users, this is their first encounter with two of the bigger brands in the world of NAS, Synology and QNAP and although at a glance they seem to provide the same kind of solution, even a brief second glance reveals that these two brands have very, very different ideas of where you should be spending your money. Synology is the sleek, apple-esc presented solution that promises a smooth and uncomplex experience, with an arguably more rigid and fixed architecture. Whereas QNAP is the more customizable and flexible in its hardware and software, but has a slightly higher learning curve and requires more time to configure perfectly. Both brands provide an excellent range of NAS solutions with each of the solutions in today’s comparison being quite similar in price, but what you are getting for your money, the range of software included, the scope of hardware that is available and how they translate to upgradable and scalability is incredibly different! So, today we are going to compare the Synology DS423+ NAS released in March 2023 (HEAVILY comparable to the 2020 gen DS920+) against the spring 2022 released QNAP TS-464 NAS. NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose? 🤍 Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021. This description contains links to and Amazon. Synology DSM 7 Version, Connecting a 2.5GbE and 5GbE USB Adapter to your Synology NAS - 🤍 Make Your Synology NAS 5Gbe Equipped with the QNAP USB-to-5GbE Adapter 🤍 For those of you who have been considering (or have already purchased) a Synology NAS in the last year or so, one of the things that the brand has never really engaged in heavily is the idea of greater-than-gigabit connectivity at the diskstation level. There HAVE been a handful of 10Gbe equipped solutions that were either priced as enterprise solutions (eg DS1621xs+) Or were partnered with weaker CPUs (eg DS1817). Alongside this, many solutions at the desktop level have arrived with PCIe upgradability, allowing users to upgrade the 1GbE ports to something more substantial. However, last year QNAP released a new kind of network interface upgrade for NAS and PC, known as the QNA-UC5G1T USB to 5GbE adapter. Many (myself included) were looking forward to testing this out on a Synology NAS system, in order to allow even modest 2 and 4-Bay Diskstation systems to upgrade from 1Gbe-to-5Gbe just with a USB port. However, the Synology NAS system does not officially support the QNAP QNA-UC5G1T adapter. However, a smart user by the name of ‘bb-qq’ on github last year successfully created an unofficial Synology app/plugin for the Diskstation App Center that will install the necessary Aquantia driver to use this QNAP adapter on your Synology NAS. Today I want to show you how to add this adapter to your NAS and upgrade your Synology to 5Gbe (or more with more adapters and USB ports) without the need of a PCIe upgrade slot. Let’s go! The Current Synology & QNAP NAS and OpenSSL Security Issues Explained 🤍 The NASCompares NAS Security Update Page (add your email to get regular updates) - 🤍 As many of you may have heard, in recent weeks there were two vulnerabilities identified in the OpenSSL encryption platform, a popular SSL option for many sites and servers, that provided an opening for particularly industrious interlopers to access a site via a weakness in the platform. Although not a service that is developed by Synology or QNAP NAS, it is used in several smaller areas/applications in their respective DSM and QTS software platforms. This is not uncommon for a brand to use a third-party provider and OpenSSL is one of the most popular open-source SSL platforms in the world. This vulnerability in OpenSSL was identified in late August and although alot has happened in that time, though the vulnerability is beginning to be resolved, it is still not fully resolved on the Synology or QNAP NAS affected software and services. So, today I wanted to go through what an SSL is, what OpenSSL is, the nature of the vulnerabilities, what has been resolved, what hasn't and ultimately explain where things are right now. Dirty Pipe Linux Vulnerability -What Do Synology, QNAP, Asustor & Terramaster NAS Users Need to Know

Dirty Pipe Linux Weakness and Why You and your Linux Based NAS Should Care? 🤍 For those that might not be aware, a vulnerability in Linux kernel 5.8 and above was disclosed by Max Kellerman last week and publically disclosed (with a proof of concept demonstrating the weakness) and this vulnerability was reported (tracked under CVE-2022-0847) and effectively allows a non-privileged user to inject and overwrite data in read-only files, including SUID processes that run as root. This Linux vulnerability is reported to be comparable to the Dirty CoW vulnerability found in Linux from 7 years ago (CVE-2016-5195) where an exploit was used for pushing malware onto software services. Full details on the public disclosure and demonstration of the vulnerability by Kellerman can be found here, but the larger impact of this is that there are many, MANY different software platforms around the world that utilize Linux as the base of their systems and alongside Android and smart home appliances, one big advocate of Linux kernel-based development is NAS storage providers in their systems and services. Now, on the plus side, Linux was incredibly quick to implement a patch on this and the vulnerability has been closed on Linux kernels 5.16.11, 5.15.25, and 5.10.102, however, most NAS servers use different versions of the Linux kernel, as well as roll out updates to their varied hardware systems in a most bespoke fashion. This leads to them potentially running outdated kernels and leaving a door open to this exploit, posing a significant issue to server administrators. We fully expect NAS brands to roll out updates where appropriate/applicable shortly to close this vulnerability, however, one consistent thread in the past when some NAS brands have been hit by ransomware/malware exploits is when vulnerabilities that are found in older software revisions are left unchecked by the end-user (ignoring brand updates or practising unsafe network security). So today, let’s discuss the dirty pipe vulnerability, how/if it affects Synology, QNAP, Asustor and Terramaster NAS platforms right now and what you should do right now to avoid any exploits being used on your system. 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 Vulnerabilities And Exploits On Synology & QNAP NAS – Stay Updated! - 🤍 NAS Buyers Guide - Get It RIGHT First Time - 🤍 Synology DSM 7 Review - ALL PARTS - 🤍 Synology DSM 6.2 vs DSM 7.0 - 🤍 Synology DSM or QNAP QTS in 2021/2022, Part I - 🤍 Synology DSM or QNAP QTS in 2021/2022, Part II - 🤍 Synology DSM or QNAP QTS in 2021/2022, Part III - 🤍 Synology NAS Unofficial Memory Upgrade Guide - 🤍 How To Switch From Google Photos And Drive To Synology NAS – A Step By Step Guide - 🤍 Or follow and speak with Robbie directly on his Twitter - 🤍 Still not enough?
