India's Nuclear Riddle - People & Power Deep in the rural plains of southern India, a mysterious government construction project is under way. Some allege the site will be a top secret "nuclear city", designed to produce highly enriched uranium and allow the country to develop thermonuclear weapons - devices more than 1,000 times more powerful than those detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki towards the end of World War II. In response, India's neighbour and decades-old foe Pakistan has vowed to keep pace and build its own equivalent programme, sparking fears that a new arms race is under way on the sub-continent - a race which could bring the region to the brink of thermonuclear war and threaten the lives and livelihoods of half of the world's population. To find out what is really going on behind the walls of this secret site, People and Power sent Indian journalist Mandakini Gahlot to investigate. - Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 - Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 - Find us on Facebook: 🤍 - Check our website: 🤍

(22 May 1998) T/I: 10:59:36 US President BILL Clinton warned on Friday (22/05) that by conducting nuclear tests, India had threatened the stability of Asia. Addressing the US naval Academy at Annapolis, the president again asked the Indian government to halt its nuclear test programme. SHOWS: ANNAPOLIS, USA 22/5 WS of naval academy gathering; SOT of USA President Bill Clinton at podium saying just last week, India conducted a series of nuclear explosive tests reminding us that technology is not always a force of good. India's action threatens the stability of Asia and challenges the firm international consensus to stop all nuclear tests. So again I ask India to stop all its nuclear tests and join the 149 countries in signing test ban treaty....and I ask Pakistan to exercise restraint - to avoid a perilous nuclear arms race. This spectre of a dangerous rivalry in South Asia is but one of the many signs that we must remain strong and vigilant against the kinds of threats we have seen already throughout the 20th century. Cutaway; SOT Clinton:"Rather than invading our beaches or launching bombers - these adversaries may launch cyber attacks against our critical military systems and our economic base. Or they deploy compact or relatively cheap weapons of mass destruction - not just nuclear but also chemical or biological. To use disease as a weapons of war. A country's nuclear policy is important because it dictates how it plans to use the weapons in case of a war. While India has maintained a "no first use" policy for decades - meaning it won't ever use nuclear weapons first - Pakistan hasn't made any such promises. Why? Shouldn't it concern India that in the event of a war, there are no guarantees that Pakistan won't use nuclear weapons first? We anaylze India's position on the use of its nuclear weapons, but even more importantly, we discuss the growing calls by experts to change India's nuclear policy because it's not Pakistan we need to be worried about now - but China! Pakistan and India are diehard enemies since the day both countries were founded. This mutual hate is specially worrisome if we take to account that both nations have the nuclear bomb. This is why, when New Delhi and Islamabad had growing tensions in the latest months, the whole World was watching. Chances were there could be a nuclear war. The reason why India and Pakistan hate each other so much is one region: Kashmir. Both countries want to control it. Since two decades ago, India has martial law over the Kashmir citizens. Pakistan, on the other hand, would have been allegedly supporting terrorist groups that attack Kashmir lands often. But why both India and Pakistan have nukes? What are nuclear doctrines all about? Could there really be an war between this two countries? Can we say the Indian presidential elections had some influence on this issue? (17 May 1998) English/Nat The Indian government on Sunday released pictures of the nuclear tests it carried out last week. India declared itself capable of making a bomb after the five underground tests, which set off a storm of international criticism. The government's top nuclear scientist involved in the tests said the tests had validated India's capability to design nuclear weapons of different applications and delivery systems. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam told reporters India was now working on perfecting missiles to carry the nuclear weapons it was able to produce. India put its top nuclear scientist on show on Sunday, to explain the point of its atomic tests. Abdul Kalam was flanked by three other top scientists who conceived and executed the nuclear explosions within a month of receiving orders from the government. The news conference included a government-released video showing pictures of tests carried out on May 11th. Details of all five tests undertaken in the testing range in the Thar desert - three on May 11th and two on May 13th - were released. Officials said the most powerful explosion was from a thermonuclear device which had a yield equivalent to 45 kilotons of T-N-T. The second came from a fission device with a yield of 15 kilotons, and the other three had yields of less than a kiloton each. Kalam defended India's right to carry out the tests in the interests of national security. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In Indian history, at no time have you seen - I will ask all of you - two-thousand-five-hundred (2500) years, at any time in Indian history have we invaded any country, but who else has come, who else - so many countries have invaded us the last two-thousand-five-hundred years. So our work, what we are doing for self, that is, about national security." SUPER CAPTION: A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Indian Government's Top nuclear scientist Abdul Kalam told reporters that India was working to increase the range of its Agni missile. SOUNDBITE: (English) "If needed it can be made in numbers. Now the Agni - we have next version, Agni version, government approved... it is an advanced stage of development." SUPER CAPTION: A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Indian Government's Top nuclear scientist Agni, or Fire, is believed to have a range of 2,480 kilometres (1,550 miles), enough to reach Shanghai or Beijing in China, the country against which India says it needs a nuclear defence. Apart from Agni, India has also tested a short-range ballistic missile, Prithvi, or Earth, which can target Pakistani cities within 150 kilometres (95 miles). India says China has shared its nuclear weapons technology with Pakistan, the nation with which India has fought in three wars since 1948 and still engages in frequent border skirmishes. The Pakistani Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub said on Sunday said his country had decided to go ahead with testing a nuclear device in response to the tests. India's nuclear tests have set off a storm of international criticism. But Kalam said India's nuclear research programme would not be affected by the tough sanctions imposed by the United States, Japan and Germany. (13 May 1998) English/Nat President Clinton on Wednesday ordered tough sanctions against India, saying its nuclear tests this week demanded an 'unambiguous response.' The sanctions includes an end to all U-S assistance to India except humanitarian aid and U-S opposition to lending by international financial institutions to India. U-S Defence Secretary William Cohen told Congress on Wednesday that the U-S and others should work to encourage neighbours of India not to follow suit with their own nuclear tests. But India's nuclear tests have ignited questions on Capitol Hill and elsewhere over why U-S intelligence was caught so unaware. News of a second round of nuclear tests in India provoked anger and dismay around the world on Wednesday. U-S President Bill Clinton called the new round of tests "a sad and terrible mistake." In response, he ordered tough sanctions against India, which means an end to U-S aid except for humanitarian purposes. In Washington, protestors marched outside the Indian Embassy, calling for an end to all nuclear tests there and urging Pakistan not to follow India's lead. Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, two Senate Committees held hearings on the matter. Testifying before an Appropriations Subcommittee, Defence Secretary William Cohen said India's tests set the dangerous stage for a copycat response by other Asian countries. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There will be a chain reaction and that's the potential of this - a chain reaction of other countries following suit. It's one of the reasons why we have worked, when I was a member of the Senate and the House, worked so hard to try to keep the nuclear genie as far in the bottle as possible as far as other nations participating in developing nuclear weapons." SUPER CAPTION: William Cohen, U-S Defence Secretary Fearing just that, the White House has dispatched two top administration officials to Pakistan to calm India's jittery neighbour. At another hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee, North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms had some words of warning for Pakistan. SOUNDBITE: (English) "To (Pakistan) Prime Minister (Nawaz) Sharif, I offer my advice, for whatever it's worth. This is the moment of truth for Pakistan as a nation as well. This is the moment of truth indeed. India (meant to say Pakistan) can be a partner to the United States in fighting nuclear proliferation or it can be a schoolyard rival to India and engage in the folly of nuclear weapons testing. And I hope Pakistan will choose to be our partner." SUPER CAPTION: Jesse Helms, U-S Senator (Republican, North Carolina) While the ramifications of the testing played out, the U-S intelligence community drew sharp criticism for being caught off guard by India's testing. Senator Helms expressed dismay over the way India's actions appear to have taken American defence officials totally off guard. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I'm absolutely astonished that the Indian government was able to catch the U-S intelligence capability so sound asleep at the switch, revealing the stark reality that the administration's six year cozying up to India has been a foolhardy and perilous substitute for common sense." SUPER CAPTION: Jesse Helms, U-S Senator (Republican, North Carolina) James Woolsey, once director of the Central Intelligence Agency (C-I-A), says his former agency has been on top of India's nuclear testing capability for some time. But he too questioned whether intelligence officials took the threat of India actually flexing their nuclear muscle too lightly. Here is a video about What Is Nuclear Triad? What Are The Weapons In India's Nuclear Triad? India Becomes 6th Country To Have A Fully Operational Nuclear Triad - India's Nuclear Triad Weapons. 🔴Support Our Work : 🤍 India joins the list of select nations to have an operational Nuclear Triad i.e. the ability to launch a nuclear counter-strike from land, sea or air. Even though India already had the nuclear tried, but according to media reports, they have become fully operational for the first time. Only the US, Russia, UK, France and China have a proven and an operations nuclear triad. The commander of the Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the Indian defence forces holds the key to the nuclear triad, marking the success of a journey which commenced soon after India carried out nuclear tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in May 1998. The nuclear triad is also a remarkable illustration of top-secret collaboration between the armed forces, and experts in fields like atomic energy, space, and defence. Though news about the ability of some missiles to deliver nuclear warheads has made it to the public domain, the means of devastating strikes have been kept under wraps. While a nuclear warhead can be delivered deep into the enemy territory through surface-to-surface Agni missiles, some of the IAF’s Mirage-2000 fighter jets have been modified to launch a nuclear attack from the air. The Rafale jets which will be inducted in the Indian Air Force by 2019 will also become nuclear capable. From the sea, ‘Dhanush’, a naval variant of the Prithvi missile, has the capability to fire a nuclear warhead from a ship, and ‘Sagarika’ from INS Arihant, the country’s first nuclear-powered submarine. The Strategic Force Command (SFC) carried out a test of ‘Dhanush’ missile in February this year as part of training for the Indian Navy, sources added. ⭐ SUBSCRIBE New Channel 'Defence Insight': 🤍 ⭐For More Defence News & Updates, Visit ► 🤍 Hello Defence Lovers, #DefenceGyaanSeries ke is episode No. 207 mai humne apko India ke Nuclear Triad Weapons baare mai bataya hai, Hume Umeed hai ki apko yeh episode pasand ayega.
