Misirlou, a traditional song from the Greek rembetiko scene. The earliest known recording of the song is from 1927. It's influenced by Middle Eastern music and also recorded in different languages. The melody was popularized in Western popular culture by Dick Dale's surf rock version which also featured in the Tarantino cult movie Pulp Fiction. The lyrics of the rembetika often reflected the harsher realities of a marginalized subculture's lifestyle. Herr Mannelig, also known as Bergatrollets frieri ("The Courting of the Mountain Troll") is a Swedish folk ballad that tells the story of a female mountain troll (bergatroll) who proposes marriage to a young human man. The troll is trying to convince Herr Mannelig ("Sir Mannelig") to marry her. She offers him many great gifts but he refuses her. The first known version of the song was published in 1877. Zistwar Fer Per is the first single of Babani Soundsystem. The band from Mauritius defends a sound that blends Indian Ocean’s traditional rhythms and new electronic influences. The track title translated from Mauritian Creole, “Spooky stories.”, evokes the island’s urban legends about night creatures in children tales. It also metaphorically describes night gatherings where spirits are awoken by the sound of traditional percussions. The latter are omnipresent, driven by a bewitching bassline and complemented by obscure synths.' Mauritius-based Babani Soundsystem is a collective of DJ, musicians and producers showcasing a unique rendition of its island’s groove. On stage, Babani Soundsystem is a ceremony, a haunting audio-visual journey blending electronic sounds and organic rhythms.
