We know it’s been a few months, but all of the parts finally arrived to test the custom carrier board for the Raspberry Pi CM4! We can finish the CM4 series by soldering components to the carrier board and testing operation. To start, we use a solder paste stencil to carefully apply solder paste to all of the footprints on the custom PCB. We then place the components and ensure that parts line up with the footprints. We use a toaster oven to reflow the solder, which attaches all of the parts to the PCB. We test the board by attaching the Compute Module 4 and loading an operating system. You can read a full write-up of how to do this here: 🤍 Flashing the eMMC is accomplished by putting the CM4 into bootloader mode (connect the nRPIBOOT pin to GND and apply power). Run the Raspberry Pi Imager program (found here: 🤍 and select your OS. Note that we used Raspberry Pi OS Lite in this demo, as we do not have a monitor for a full GUI. You will also need to enable the UART console if you would like to be able to interface with the Raspberry Pi without a monitor or networking (e.g. SSH). Add “enable_uart=1” to config.txt in the boot drive (while the CM4 is in bootloader mode, which enumerates the eMMC as an SD card on your host system). From there, we test operation by writing a simple blinking LED program in Python. At this point, you should have a full Linux operating system at your disposal! И вывод однозначный - при улучшении ситуации с ПО для RPI - такие модули со всевозможными платами могут серьезно побороться за рынок ультрабюджетных ПК уже в ближайшее время. I scalped the Raspberry Pi CM4 and reached 2.5GHz Of course, it's not safe; you definitely lose your warranty and can damage the device. I used Compute Blade RC2 of my own design. CM4 Power 5.1V up to ~4.5A It was necessary to keep the temperature no higher than ~6 degrees Celsius. Compressed air was used for cooling. I've been following these projects for a few weeks, and I wanted to share them with you. I know it's still hard to get your hands on the official Compute Module IO Board, but maybe you won't have to, if you're able to get your hands on one of these unique and awesome other boards! Some of them are released under the Open Source Hardware License, so you could even build them or make improvements to them on your own. Raspberry Pi released the Compute Module 4 (CM4) in October, which is a single board computer with all of the processing power of the Raspberry Pi 4, but in a tiny form factor! It removes many of the connectors (USB, HDMI, etc.), as the intention is for you to add your own with a custom board and enclosure. The CM4 is not intended to be a desktop replacement (like the RPi 4) but rather to be used in industrial or professional cases where you might need an SBC embedded in, say, a robot. In this series, we’ll show you how to create your own, custom Raspberry Pi CM4 carrier board with KiCad! In the first episode of the series, we’ll start by creating the schematic. Note that we begin by using a CM4 carrier template, which be downloaded here: 🤍 We also use the Raspberry Pi CM4IO carrier board as a reference, as it has a lot of example circuitry for connectors, ports, etc. that connect to the Compute Module 4. The CM4IO KiCad design files can be found here: 🤍 Finally, note that you need KiCad 6.0 or later to view the CM4IO or template files. If v6.0 is not available yet, you can download the nightly build of KiCad: 🤍 The video shows you how to work with hierarchical sheets in KiCad and add custom components. You can find pre-made schematic symbols and footprints for some components on Ultra Librarian or SnapEDA. We add USB-C power, USB 2.0 data (client mode), LEDs, a Qwiic/Stemma connector, and a basic header to the CM4 carrier board. While this particular board has not been tested (yet) when this video was released, we hope that this video helps you create your own carrier board!
